Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems consist of a number of components including tags, handheld or stationary readers, data input units and system software. The tags are the backbone of the Radio Frequency Identification technology and come in all shapes, sizes and read ranges including thin and flexible "smart labels" which can be laminated between paper or plastic.

Radio Frequency Identification creates an automatic way to collect information about a product, place, time or transaction quickly, easily and without human error. It provides a contactless data link, without need for line of sight or concerns about harsh or dirty environments that restrict other auto ID technologies such as bar codes.

In addition, RFID is more than just an ID code, it can be used as a data carrier, with information being written to and updated on the tag on the fly.

RFID has been applied to hundreds of applications in dozens of key industries. Today, we see RFID used for vehicle and personnel access control, automotive anti-theft systems, product and asset tracking and supply chain automation.

A typical system consists of key elements including transponders, readers, host platform and system software. Transponders are the back-bone of a system and are available in many form factors. All transponders supplied by SB Electronic Systems are passive, the limitations of battery powered active transponders are overcome as a result of the transponder taking its power from the reader unit across a wireless link.

Low Frequency

Texas Instruments Low Frequency technology provides the best read range in its class, typically up to 2 metres. These RF transponders operate reliably in harsh environments - such as high temperatures, moisture and chemicals where barcodes are inappropriate. All transponders have read only and read/write capability and are supported by a wide range of reader module options. Typical applications include vehicle identification, livestock management, process control and contract waste collection.

High Frequency

The latest RFID technology is supplied in a paper thin format. These transponders can be embedded into labels and cards to produce inexpensive and consumable tracking devices. Texas Instrument's are the first manufacturer to produce transponders to ISO15693, the global standard for "smart labels". Each transponder features a unique identification number, up to 2048 bits of read/write memory and a state-of-the-art anti-collision system. Recent applications include document management, retail product identification, electronic ski passes, payment/loyalty tokens and management of returnable containers.
